Old Fashioned Soft Sugar Cookie Recipe

This old fashioned soft sugar cookie recipe is delicious, and will remind you of the cookies your grandmother used to make.

Because the texture is soft, it is not recommended that you decorate cookies using this formula.

  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 Cup Buttermilk
  • 1/2 Tsp Salt
  • 1/2 Tsp Nutmeg
  • 1 Tsp Baking Soda
  • 2 Tsp Baking Powder
  • 2 Cups Sugar
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 Tsp Lemon Extract

Sift flour, salt, nutmeg, baking soda, and baking powder together in separate bowl and set aside.

In mixer bowl cream shortening and sugar until smooth and creamy using paddle attachment.

Add the eggs and beat until well incorporated, add vanilla and lemon.

Add flour to the wet ingedients in thirds. Mix just until flour is blended - do not over mix.

Turn your dough out onto the work surface and divide into halves or thirds and cover with plastic wrap.

Refrigerate until firm - 1 to 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Lightly dust work surface with flour. Roll dough to 1/4" thick, sprinkling flour on rolling pin and work surface to prevent sticking.

Roll and cut shapes and place on parchment lined baking sheet in the center of the oven.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until edges begin to brown.
